Erica Ward is a Califonia-native watercolor artist living in Tokyo.
After graduating from the department of Japanese Language and Literature at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Ward moved to Japan where she has resided since 2010. She has long been inspired by Japanese designs and imagery, and her work is also influenced by her Tokyo environment. Her works often personify themes as human figures, or conversely give personality to objects by centering her compositions on them.
By combining mundane objects in surreal ways, her works ask viewers to look again at what they see in the day-to-day, and to consider that things that are generally overlooked as mundane can also be things of beauty and symbols of culture. Ward’s visual style is inspired by art nouveau and ukiyoé and by framing soft watercolors with stark ink outlines combines semi-realism with graphic pop.
With her cultural perspective forever wedged between inside and outside, Ward’s artwork creates a space for both Japanese and non-Japanese viewers to discover both something familiar and something unexpected.
