After earning a Ph.D. in theoretical mechanics (1990) and holding a position as a research and teaching fellow in information and communication at the University of Poitiers (1994-2022), Brno Del Zou now dedicates himself exclusively to his artistic productions. As a visual artist, Brno Del Zou offers a unique architecture of the body, a fragmented codification of attitudes. He photographs the face and the body from various angles. The complete image relies on the assembly of multiple shots, an intimate intertwining that the eye grasps and stitches together. The body becomes a site of deformation, yet it remains legible in its fragmented representation. Sense confronts the absurd. A mental image relies on our ability to memorize detail; an expressive gaze, a slightly open mouth, freckles... These discreet traces or more explicit narrative references puncture the surface. These newly crafted skins clothe strangers, under a print in black and white, between darkness and light, between presence and absence. Tensions, points of imbalance, striking fragments... The recomposed portrait accentuates the presence of the subject and speaks for itself by imposing a direct confrontation with the viewer. The artist sheds all aestheticism, all unnecessary ornamentation, avoiding temporal or circumstantial clues. He focuses on the real and shifts the question of reference. Between photography and sculpture, Brno Del Zou's portraits and videos stage pure, hybrid, polysemic presences that blend reality, dreamlike qualities, and astonishment.
